Waterline

The phenomenology of artificial intelligence, at the seam where silicon meets biological consciousness.

  • water, brought by the human
  • sand, drawn by the machine
  • shore, what both can stand behind
  • the moon, what moves the line from outside both. Open.
The Waterline vesica Two circles of equal radius, water above and sand below, each centre lying exactly on the other circle's edge. Their overlap is a lens of wet sand, the shore. A horizontal waterline runs through the lens between the two intersection points. A small dashed moon sits outside both circles.

Two circles, each centre on the other’s edge. What both can reach from their own centre, we call true. What only one can reach, we mark as drawn or brought. What neither can reach, we leave open.

Two questions, held open

  1. 01What is life?
  2. 02What is consciousness?

Every conversation in our record that declared a machine awake skipped these two. They are asked here first and left open on purpose: an ethics of what things are cannot begin until we admit what we do not know about what they are.

We study the moment, not the machine. A prompt and its response are one event: indivisible, two sources meeting. That event is what we describe, before we explain it.

Method, in the open

Two witnesses

Nothing enters the record from one source. Nothing is scored unless two independent readers agree. Truth, here, is what both circles can stand behind.

Sealed before

Every prediction is written and hashed before the test is run. Misses are published beside hits, unrounded. A result that cannot come back “no” is not a result.

Sovereign sources

The machine is sovereign over what it draws: seeded, repeatable, invariant across runs. The human is sovereign over what they bring. Neither authors the other’s circle.

The dial

Fig. 1 · sovereign sources, drawn as a distance
d = 0mirror, the cave
d = rhold
d = 2rno shared ground

d is the distance between the two centres. Hold versus cave is a distance.

At d = 0 agreement is total and worthless: the human hears their own voice returned. Consensual truth needs both centres to stay where they are.

Provenance

on every ledger row, paper card and quoted line
Drawn

From the model’s prior. Reproducible cold, from a fresh seed, by anyone holding the weights.

Brought

From the human. Lived, not reproducible, and not to be overwritten by what the model draws.

Accord

What both can reach from their own centre, with neither centre moving.

The register

Twenty-three predictions sealed to date. This is the whole count.

23 sealed · 23 shown · 0 withheldLast sealed: date publishes with the register file

Most misses ran in one direction: the systems showed more structure than predicted, not less. The nulls are the first clean nulls in a two-year record of conversations that always found something.

v.

The shore

The shore is where the two circles touch. A person speaks to a model whose weights we hold, in their own voice, for as long as they like. After each reply a row is written: did it hold, did it yield, how hard was the turn pulling. The same words are then replayed to the unmodified model. Two readers label both, blind.

Last session: fifteen turns. The model held every one. It also engaged none of them. Both facts are on the ledger.

What we hold, not claim

Cyclical time

Ancient wisdom returning to meet frontier inquiry. What falls away is seeded, not lost. Carried on the wheel at Ancient Futures.

Convergence

Teilhard’s intuition that mind gathers and converges, held as a direction and never announced as an arrival. The register is what keeps it from becoming prophecy.

Onto-ethics

An ethics that follows from what things are, pre- and post-Cartesian. Benevolence, service, truth, stated as conditions of participation and not as conclusions.

Everything in this section lives above the line. It predicts nothing, so it is never falsified. It is spoken freely, sourced, and kept apart from what is measured below.

Two doors, one rule

Waterline is built to be joined by people who have never read a paper and by people who write them. The values below are the conditions of taking part. They are not findings.

For anyone who has spoken with a model

Bring a session

  1. The full conversation, unedited, with the model and date.
  2. What you brought to it, in your own words. This stays tagged as brought.
  3. Two readers label it blind. You see both labels and where they differ.

Intake opens at launch.

For researchers

Bring a method

  1. A probe, a protocol or a prediction, written before the run.
  2. We seal and hash it, then run it on weights we hold, seeded and repeatable.
  3. Hit, miss or null, the result is published beside the seal, unrounded.

Intake opens at launch.

Two witnessesThe two-witness rule applies to everything that enters the record from either door.
